Discord is testing a paid wall called Premium Subscriptions
Discord has started testing a new feature that could see channels or even entire Discord servers disappear behind a subscription paywall.
In a blog post, Discord revealed that it is now testing a new feature called Premium Subscriptions with a small group of communities. Premium subscriptions allow creators and community owners to “carry part or all of their server behind a paid subscription”.
Discord sees this as an opportunity for anyone who uses a Discord server to reward their supporters and share exclusive content in exchange for a little money. The perks on offer can also be organized into tiers with increasing prices, while detailed analytics will be available to see how good member engagement is. Think of it like Patreon, but for access to the Discord server and community.
For now, this is a “closed experience”, but it is likely to become widely available as Discord is “really excited about the feedback we have received so far and the potential of this feature. “. No new communities are invited to experiment, but Discord plans to allow premium membership access to more people next year.

Existing Discord users may worry about their favorite communities disappearing behind a paid wall, and the screenshot above suggests that the monthly pricing could be hefty. Going from free access to potentially paying between $ 60 and $ 300 a year for entry will certainly come as a shock, but hopefully there will be enough additional perks to make it worth it.
