During the first week of school after the winter break, Bronx high school teacher Jennifer Gorman was so exhausted by staff logistical headaches and student absences that she collapsed on the couch on her way home.

This Monday, she discovered another setback: the digital platforms her school relies on to track students’ grades, missing assignments and to keep notes on their mental health were completely shut down.

The systems haven’t flashed back to life all week.

“Murphy’s Law is in full effect,” said Gorman, a teacher at Mott Hall V. “We’ve had one seizure after another.”

New York public schools depend on the tools, known as Skedula and PupilPath, for a dizzying array of tasks. Many schools rely on Skedula as an attendance tracking tool and as a gradebook, keeping track of class averages and missing assignments.

Using PupilPath, which is connected to Skedula, schools can easily communicate this information to parents and students or send SMS. Other schools use it to document behavioral incidents and observations about students’ mental health so that guidance counselors can follow up.

Some schools use attendance features to conduct contact tracing and determine which students should take rapid home tests. And students depend on the information to know if they are able to pass courses and earn enough credits to graduate this year, which is especially crucial as the grading period ends on many campuses.

The disruption comes at a difficult time for schools that need to communicate effectively with parents as coronavirus cases have spiked. Student attendance has dropped significantly since the end of winter vacation, and daily attendance has not exceeded 77%, with well over 200,000 student absences each day.

“There’s never a good time for this to happen, but it’s a bad time,” said Ari Hoogenboom, principal of Abraham Lincoln High School in Brooklyn.

Privacy issues

With mental health information and other sensitive data stored on the platform, some educators have raised serious privacy concerns about whether the information could have been breached.

Illuminate Education, the company that owns Skedula and PupilPath, has said little about the outage, which appears to have started last Saturday. A note on its website says “it appears to be the result of an attempted security incident.” A company spokesperson did not say whether any data was stolen.

The company’s chief operating officer, Scott Virkler, released a statement saying the company was trying to restore service as quickly as possible and had “initiated an investigation with the assistance of third-party experts.”

The city has been in regular contact with Illuminate, said Education Department spokeswoman Sarah Casasnovas.

“So far, there is no confirmation that any information about our schools has been accessed or taken,” she said in a statement. “We will continue to monitor this situation very closely and update students, families and schools on new developments.”

The separate Education Department databases, where schools must enter final grades and attendance figures, were not affected, according to Casasnovas.

Neither Illuminate nor the city’s Department of Education said how much New York City public school student data is stored on the platform.

Complicate contact tracing

For a vice principal at a Brooklyn middle and high school, losing access to Skedula made the already difficult task of contact tracing even more difficult. The deputy director, who did not want to be named to speak freely, relied on Skedula to obtain attendance information for each class period.

Going through attendance records, she was able to quickly see who was in class with a student or teacher who had tested positive for COVID, as someone who tested positive could have been in classrooms with 70 other students. All day long.

Now teachers record attendance by passing around a blank sheet of paper and asking students to write their names.

On Thursday, the vice principal said she spent the morning with those sheets of paper spread out on the floor of her office, trying to decipher the students’ handwriting and pulling from several databases to determine who had been around. four different students who reported positive COVID results the day before. .

“A one-hour process turns into a four-hour process. I literally do nothing all day except contact tracing — and it’s only gotten worse since Skedula came out,” she said.

On other campuses, even mundane tasks have become complicated.

Neal Green, a teacher at Abraham Lincoln High School, was covering a colleague’s class recently and suspected one of the students in the room was pretending to be another student and cutting out the class. Normally, it would extract Skedula, which includes a photo of each student and associates the face with the name. But Green had to get creative.

“I asked the student to spell his name and he misspelled it,” Green said. “So I knew.”

His school was able to retrieve very limited information from the company regarding students’ current course averages, Green said, raising hopes the system could soon come back to life.

Yet there is a growing sense of unease on some campuses about how teachers will calculate grades that are coming due without access to their digital gradebooks.

“It can’t not come back,” Gorman said. “We don’t have a backup system.”

Commercial fleet refueling services company Fuelman, a subsidiary of FLEETCOR, has launched a new solution to help fleet customers pay for and accurately track all electric vehicle (EV) charging activities, including the reimbursement of employees for home charging, according to a press release on Wednesday (January 12).

“As businesses increasingly seek to adopt electric vehicles, the refueling landscape is becoming more complex, making fleet management more challenging,” said Alexey Gavrilenya, group president of North America Fuel at FLEET COR.

“We are at the forefront of the energy transition by providing a complete and enhanced management and payment platform to help customers efficiently manage fleets with any fuel mix,” said Gavrilenya.

The EV solution is available to Fuelman customers and can be added to a physical fleet card or integrated as a virtual EV companion feature. Both physical and digital solutions can be used to make payments in electric vehicle charging apps on charging networks that accept Mastercard.

Driven by the number of employees charging electric vehicles from home and the need for reimbursement, the new Fuelman solution gleans data from cars to track each time they are charged and logs the type of charger and its location. The tool tracks and manages usage, costs and reimbursements, whether the electric vehicle is charged at home or elsewhere.

“As a leader in commercial fleet management and payment solutions, we can provide our customers with convenience, fraud controls and data insights no matter where and how they shop,” said Keagan. Russo, president of Fuelman and North America Local Fleet.

Two days after the arrest of Aumkareshwar Thakur who allegedly developed the “Sulli Deals” application, where Muslim women were auctioned online, Delhi police are trying to identify all members of the “trad” group involved. in women’s trolling, through digital flashback.

According to police sources, laptops seized from both Thakur and Neeraj Bishnoi – arrested by Mumbai police in the ‘Bulli Bai’ application case – are currently being analyzed by the forensic service. . Police try to recover files deleted from devices. The two men were members of the same Twitter group aimed at “defaming and trolling Muslim women”.

Digital fingerprints

“We are trying to identify and track down all members of the ‘trad’ group who have been involved in selling women online …

Police identified up to 30 Twitter accounts that were part of the so-called “trad” group, officials said.

The officer said that since all of the Twitter accounts that were part of the group were deleted, efforts are underway to track down those accounts through digital fingerprints. “They’ve used all kinds of names and aliases for their accounts, so it’s hard to identify a specific person… we can go back and find the person through the IP address,” the officer added.

The source said that once all members of the group are identified and found, appropriate legal action will be taken and further arrests are likely.

Officials had said Thakur was part of a “trad” (Tradmahasabha) group on Twitter and Telegram, whose members reportedly expressed offensive views on topics ranging from the caste system to women’s empowerment. Insults and caste abuse are also discussed in these groups, a senior officer said.

DCP (Special Cell Cyber Unit) KPS Malhotra had stated that Thakur had developed the code for the “Sulli Deals” application on GitHub and had given access to it to all members of the “trad” group. Police said Thakur shared the app on his Twitter account and the photos of Muslim women were uploaded by other members of the group.

Fact or Fiction: IRS tracks payments over $ 600 on Paypal and Venmo in 2022 https://leben-im-zentrum.org/fact-or-fiction-irs-tracks-payments-over-600-on-paypal-and-venmo-in-2022/ Sat, 08 Jan 2022 14:00:06 +0000 https://leben-im-zentrum.org/fact-or-fiction-irs-tracks-payments-over-600-on-paypal-and-venmo-in-2022/ Israel Sebastian / Getty If you own your own business or have a side business and get paid through digital apps like PayPal, Zelle, Cash App, or Venmo, income over $ 600 will now be reported to the IRS. If you own your own business or have a side business and get paid through digital apps like PayPal, Zelle, Cash App, or Venmo, income over $ 600 will now be reported to the IRS. A provision of the 2021 US bailout, which went into effect Jan. 1, requires third-party payment processors to report transactions received for goods or services totaling more than $ 600 per year to the IRS.

Prior to this legislation, a third-party payment platform would only report to the tax administration if a user made more than 200 business transactions and made more than $ 20,000 in payments in a year.

What does this mean to you? The main thing to know right now is that this does not apply to your 2021 tax return, which you will be filing this tax season. But that will apply to income you earn throughout 2022, which you report when filing in 2023. Here are four things to know about the new tax rule.

1. This is not a tax change, it is a change of declaration

If you are self-employed, you should already be paying taxes on your total income, regardless of how you receive your payments for goods and services. The new legislation isn’t a tax change – it’s a tax return change so the IRS can keep tabs on transactions made through payment apps that often go unreported.

Going forward, third-party payment companies will issue you with a 1099-K tax form every year if you earn $ 600 or more per year in income from goods or services. This tax form can include taxable and non-taxable transactions, especially if the account is both business and personal.

The IRS will also receive a copy of the tax form and will not rely solely on the self-report. “The IRS will be able to cross-reference both our report and yours,” Paypal noted in a November 2021 press release.

To make it easier to manage your business finances, we recommend that you create separate PayPal, Zelle, Cash App, or Venmo accounts only for your business finances.

2. The IRS Doesn’t Count the Money You Send to Family and Friends

Rumors have circulated that the IRS is cracking down on money sent through third-party payment apps to family and friends, but this is not true. Personal transactions involving gifts, favors or refunds are not considered taxable. Here are some examples of tax-free transactions:

  • Money received from a family member as a holiday or birthday gift
  • Money received from a friend covering his share of a restaurant bill
  • Money received from your roommate or partner for their share of rent and utilities

3. Payment apps may ask you for tax information

Now that this new law is in effect, payment apps like PayPal can contact you to confirm tax information, such as your Employer Identification Number (EIN), Individual Tax Identification Number (ITIN), or your social Security number. If you own a business, you likely have an EIN, but if you are a sole proprietor or self-employed or self-employed, you will provide an ITIN or Social Security number.

4. If you sell personal items at a loss, you will not owe taxes.

If you sell personal items for less than you paid for them and collect money through third-party payment apps, this new law won’t affect you. For example, if you buy a sofa for your home for $ 500 and later sell it on Facebook Marketplace for $ 200, you won’t owe taxes on the sale. This is because it is a personal item that you have sold at a loss. However, you may need to show the original purchase documentation to prove that you sold the item at a loss.

Be sure to keep track of your purchases and transactions online to avoid paying taxes on any non-taxable income – and if in doubt, contact a tax professional for help.

Several smartwear products took center stage at CES 2022. In addition to heavyweights such as Garmin and Skagen, a Movano ring was also unveiled, with a design specifically designed for female users. Finally, a French company called Circular also unveiled its first product, simply called Circular Ring.

The circular ring has interchangeable outer shells for user customization. The ring is extremely light at only 4 grams. It is also waterproof up to 5 meters. It also offers up to 22 days of built-in data storage without a Bluetooth connection. The biocompatible resin product will be available in different sizes.

The circular ring could compete with the Movano ring in the years to come. Movano official.

Tracking and functionalities

A 14 day calibration period begins as soon as the user wears the ring for the first time. During this time, the Ring establishes the user’s basic health parameters, which helps them give personalized and actionable recommendations for making healthy changes in their life. Circular tracks several health metrics, including temperature, heart rate variability, energy levels, and VO2 Max.

Circular has a dual PPG sensor in its ring combined with the Circular app that allows it to read heart signals and blood oxygen. It detects if the heart rate shows signs of cardiac arrhythmia and if the heartbeat is stable. The data being tracked is believed to be clinically accurate and may be shared with a professional for further advice. Wearing it both during the day and at night can help Circular correlate data using machine learning.

Circular also appears to be extremely effective at tracking sleep. It can tell a user how much time they spend in each stage of sleep – light sleep, deep sleep, REM sleep and when they are awake. More importantly, it also calculates how efficiently a user has slept. The app shares data on a number of important criteria for examining sleep quality, including the time it takes to fall asleep, sleep debt, actual sleep time, disturbances while sleeping, and more. It also provides silent vibrations to users in their light sleep phase if they wish. be awake, without disturbing their environment.

Pricing and availability

A single charge of the ring gives it four days of battery life. A single charge from 0% to 100% can be done in an hour. Pre-orders, which will begin soon, will run through February 27, 202. The device will cost 259 euros ($ 293) during that time. Starting February 28, the price will drop to 289 euros ($ 327). The shipping and other details are expected to be announced soon by the company.

The Mayo Clinic introduced a diet in 2010 that became a New York Times bestseller and has been a popular choice for weight loss ever since. In December 2021, the Mayo Clinic released a revamped version of this diet that includes a digital platform and app so you can track your habits, diet, exercise, progress toward your goals, and more.

“It’s a way of taking a proven program that’s been around for a while and bringing it to more people in a digitally friendly way,” Donald Hensrud, MD, medical director of the Mayo Clinic Healthy Living Program, says TODAY ‘ HUI.

How does the Mayo Clinic diet work?

The Mayo Clinic Diet focuses on creating new, healthy habits and breaking old, less healthy habits. It starts with a two week quick start phase where you add five habits, break five habits, and attack five bonus habits if you want to. This phase is designed to speed up your weight loss. “The more you change your habits, the more weight you will lose,” Dr. Hensrud said.

These habits can be things like eating breakfast, eating more fruits and vegetables, eliminating added sugar, not eating while watching TV, or watching TV only during your daily activity.

After the first two weeks, you move into the “Live It” phase, focusing on lasting diet and lifestyle changes that you can maintain over the long term. The initial program lasts 12 weeks, with the option to continue for as long as you want. It’s based on the Mayo Clinic’s Healthy Weight Pyramid, with vegetables and fruits dominating the diet.

“It provides evidence-based advice,” said Dr Hensrud. “It’s not effortless, but it’s practical, realistic and enjoyable enough to be sustainable. This will not only help people manage their weight, but will improve their health in the process. “

What Does Mayo Clinic’s Diet Research Say?

Dr Hensrud said the changes in your habits that the diet encourages are evidence-based and have some support for weight management. And eating more plant-based foods – which the diet encourages – is associated with a lower risk of heart disease, cancer, and diabetes.

Monitoring or self-monitoring behaviors can also promote weight management. This is because they keep you connected to what you are doing and what is working for you. For example, tracking what you eat can show you if you are eating enough fruits and vegetables, or if your portions are too big. “These tools have been shown to be useful in numerous studies in helping people manage their weight,” said Samantha Cassetty, New York-based registered dietitian and co-author of “Sugar Shock” today. “These are all things that make you feel better emotionally and physically.”

Is the Mayo Clinic Diet Right For You?

“This diet is focused on promoting healthy foods like fruits and vegetables and whole grains, and it also aims to help you establish healthier habits,” Cassetty said. “He has a lot to offer. “

The two week “Lose It” phase may seem restrictive, but it can also speed up your weight loss. “It’s short enough to see some success and start making long-term lifestyle changes,” Dr. Hensrud said. Although the “Lose It” phase is not sustainable in the long term, it can give people confidence. “At first, when people start to change their ways, they’re intimidated. Once they get started and see that they are losing weight, they become self-reliant. They are here for the long term, ”he said.

So, if you want to push yourself for two weeks to see progress, this diet might be a good choice for you. “There is a good chance that you will lose weight because your eating habits have changed dramatically, and it can be motivating to take you to the next phase, where you can figure out what works for you in the long run,” said Cassetty.

This diet could be difficult if it is a complete overhaul of your eating habits. “It’s okay to feel like your health behavior is a little over the top,” Cassetty said. “But it still has to be able to adapt to your lifestyle.”

And if the diet brings up messy eating habits, you might want to find a different approach.

You will pay $ 20 to $ 50 per month for the plan, depending on how long you are enrolled. There is also a book based on an earlier version of the program.

What do you eat on the Mayo Clinic diet?

The original Mayo Clinic diet emphasizes vegetables and fruits, whole grains, and healthy fats like olive oil and avocado, and includes smaller amounts of meat, cheese, and eggs.

You can also select variants focused on these diets:

  • More protein, which balances the protein in your meals to help control your appetite.
  • Healthy keto, a high fat, low carb diet that highlights olive oil, avocado, nuts, and seeds.
  • Vegetarian, which includes eggs and dairy products as well as bean and soy protein.
  • Mediterranean, which is plant-based and includes fish and meat.

On a typical day, you might eat:

  • Breakfast: Cheese breakfast burrito.
  • Breakfast: Italian chicken bread salad.
  • Having dinner: Teriyaki salmon and vegetable skewers.
  • Nibble: Fruits and vegetables.

The Mayo Clinic diet is similar to:

  • Mediterranean diet, which also emphasizes whole plant-based foods.
  • DASH Diet, or Diet Approaches to Stop Hypertension, which aims to reduce or control high blood pressure.
  • The MIND Diet, which combines the Mediterranean and DASH diets to help promote brain health.
  • Flexitarian diet, a predominantly vegetarian diet that includes meat.
  • The Blue Zones Diet, a plant-based diet inspired by the food choices of people around the world who live the longest.

Is the Mayo Clinic diet effective in the long term?

The “Live It” phase of the Mayo Clinic diet incorporates healthy eating and lifestyle changes that you can maintain throughout your life.

Talk to your doctor before starting the Mayo Clinic diet or any other regimen – your doctor or registered dietitian can recommend the best diet for you, based on your health needs.

For Chinese security forces, the effort is a bold extension of a mandate that previously focused on Chinese platforms and better-known foreign dissidents. Now, violations as simple as posting a critical article on Twitter – or in the case of Ms. Chen, 23, citing, “I’m on Hong Kong’s side” – can have swift repercussions.

Actions against people speaking out on Twitter and Facebook have increased in China since 2019, according to an online database aggregating them. The database, compiled by an anonymous activist, records cases based on publicly available verdicts, police notices and reports, although information is limited in China.

“The net has definitely widened overseas over the past year,” said Yaxue Cao, editor-in-chief of ChinaChange.org, a website that covers civil society and human rights. The aim is to encourage self-censorship already prevalent among Chinese on global social media, she said, likening the purge of criticism to an overactive lawnmower.

“They cut the things that look tinny and tall – the most straightforward,” she said. “Then they look around, the higher blades of grass no longer cover the lower blades. They say, “Oh, they’re problematic too, let’s mow them again. “

Chinese security authorities are bringing new technical expertise and new funding to the process, according to publicly available procurement documents, police manuals and the government contractor, who works on overseas internet investigations.

In 2020, when police in Western Gansu Province asked companies to help them monitor international social media, they set up a scoring system. One of the criteria included a company’s ability to analyze Twitter accounts, including tweets and follower lists. Shanghai police offered a tech company $ 1,500 for each overseas account investigation, according to a May purchase document.

Some PS5 restocking stats in December

(iStock / The Independent)

All the right people! We’re closing the blog shop for tonight, but as a farewell gift we’re sharing a few stats that just highlight how great December has been in terms of restocking so far. Before that, the PS5 is still in stock if you haven’t bought one yet.

UK PS5 restocking statistics for December

We love the numbers, especially when it comes to the PS5 stock. While we still have a day left in December, it has been the best month for restocking since the release of the PS5. There have been 53 declines so far in December, improving on the previous high of 36 in August.

Unsurprisingly, Game has had the most restocking (with the retailer’s consoles having been in stock for eight straight days now). The game is followed (surprisingly this time) by Currys, who had eight restockings this month, and then BT with five.

Here is a ranking:

  • 9 to play (one has lasted eight days so far)
  • 8 in Currys
  • 5 at BT (one lasted three days)
  • 4 on PlayStation Direct
  • 4 to EE
  • 3 on Amazon
  • 3 to Very
  • 3 in Littlewoods
  • 2 in Argos
  • 2 at AO (we lasted two days so far)
  • 2 at Smyths Toys
  • 2 to ShopTo
  • 2 in the Studio
  • 1 at John Lewis & Partners
  • 1 to Asda
  • 1 in the box
  • 1 in Hamleys

We’ll be back tomorrow to see if the PS5 is still in stock at Game and AO. Maybe 53 will be beaten. See you all for New Years Eve!

Ratchet & Clank review: Rift Apart ‘PS5

Game and AO both sell bundles with Ratchet & Clank: Rift apart. But how good is it really? Well, this is one of our favorite games of 2021 and won a spot in our roundup of the best PS5 games.

“Rift apart has fiery charm, in its character design, animated combat mechanics and explorable levels that feel big without looking like a maze, busy without being cluttered, ”our writer said in their opinions. “It’s one of the best glimpses yet of what the new generation of consoles has to offer. It’s big, it’s bright, and it’s almost impossible not to like.”

How much does a PS5 cost?

As we’re sure you all know by now, Sony makes two versions of the PlayStation 5. The PS5 digital edition is priced at £ 349.99, while the standard PS5, which includes a disc drive, is priced at 449. £ 99. The latter is the same as the Xbox X series, while the less powerful Xbox S series (which also lacks a disc drive) is lower than the digital PS5, at £ 249 (but is also much less powerful than the digital edition PS5).

Many retailers, including Game, Very, Argos, ShopTo and As Studio, like to sell their PS5 stock in batches. This often means spending more but getting extras like a second controller, a selection of games and other accessories. Bundles tend to be easier to obtain, but you’ll end up spending more money than buying the console on its own.

Only bundles are in stock at AO and Game at this time.

Do PS4 games work on PS5?

If you’re sitting there right now, staring at your stack of PS4 games, wondering if they’ll play on your new PS5. Don’t worry, they sure will!

If you have the Disc Editing Console, all that blood, sweat and tears that end these campaigns will not have been wasted because you will be able to insert your PS4 discs and play them just fine on the PS5. However, only PS4 games purchased from PlayStation Store will work on the Digital Edition console. Why? Well, because you’re going to try to insert a disc into a nonexistent hole and, well, that’s not a good idea.

Most PS4 games have received generous price cuts since the release of the PS5, so it’s worth reading our roundup of the best PS4 games to buy right now.

How do I get a PlayStation Direct PS5 invitation?

(iStock / The Independent)

PlayStation Direct uses an invitation system to launch the PS5, similar to BT, inviting some lucky PSN users to buy the console before everyone else. Stock usually goes live around 8 a.m. and then the retailer opens orders for everyone around 10 a.m. But how do you get an invitation?

It’s an extremely vague process, and we’re not very familiar with the mechanics of how the PlayStation Direct invitation system works. As far as we know, the main requirement is that you need a PSN account. You probably need to be a bit network active i.e. playing games on your PS4 to receive an invite as well.

Other than that, it seems to be completely hit and miss. We’ve already seen people with a PS5 being asked to buy the console, although they clearly don’t need it. We expect another PlayStation Direct restock to take place during the first week of January.
